Swingtime Big Band invites you to a new musical journey, where the orchestra's archives are opened again and forgotten scores come to life. Following the first concert featuring the works of Danish jazz legend Niels Jørgen Steen, this evening sets course toward the USA and the classic bigband tradition.
At the center stands the legendary Count Basie Orchestra and the characteristic swing style that has shaped jazz history. The program unfolds through works by two of jazz's greatest arrangers:
- Quincy Jones – worked as arranger and conductor for Count Basie from the late 1950s through the early 1960s. He contributed decisively to the orchestra's modern swing sound and later collaborated with, among others, Frank Sinatra on iconic albums such as It Might as Well Be Swing (1964) and Sinatra at the Sands (1966).
- Sammy Nestico – joined around 1967 and became one of Count Basie Orchestra's most important arrangers. From the late 1960s until Count Basie's death in 1984, Nestico shaped the orchestra's characteristic, elegantly swinging sound in its later years.
