A powerful production about sibling love, family trauma, and the legacy of a voice that fascinated and provoked takes to theaters across the country in November and December. This staged interpretation is based on the award-winning 2024 book where Yahya Hassan's mother and his four siblings – Kawther, Khadeeja, Abd Al-Salam, and Abdullah – open up for the first time about their shared childhood in the Trillegården neighborhood near Aarhus.
The performance depicts a family's struggle to find stability and meaning amid rootlessness, refugee trauma, family violence, crime, gang environments, and social marginalization. These are stories from a closed world – a part of Denmark rarely seen on stage – and form the backdrop for understanding the pain and artistic origins of Yahya Hassan's literary work. Director Sargun Oshana, an award-winning Iraqi-Danish filmmaker, dramatizes these stories of reality with sensitivity and power.
